My choice is without a doubt the Ford Flex Ecoboost. There is more space than any of the higher competitors (Traverse, Highlander, etc.) as well as a nicer interior for the family woman. The looks are about its best feature, making yourself stand out from the schools carpools and the minivans. Your kids would never get confused on which is the car they got dropped off in the morning. And those very kids will enjoy the openness of the several sunroofs, entertainment systems, and even a refrigerated center console!
And for us, Opponauts, the Fantastic Ecoboost engine with 365 HP and enough torque to haul all of the kids, their belongings, and give us fun times behind the wheel. And the Wagonness of it makes it worth it's $45K price tag.
Tell me Oppo, what is a good car for mothers out there?

that's a great car! My mother actually prefers driving smaller things, but I chose the Flex because it was a 7 seater

hhmhmmm, that could do it. But does it have a REFRIGERATED Center Console?

Both me and my sister have cars of our own, so she doesn't need something so gigantic. And she likes going fast. And saving money on fuel. And AWD.

I am brainstorming the Idea of the Flex Eco-Boost, and a 911 or other sports car pulling a trailer in that very same add

hahah my mom also loves going fast. It was funny, when we got the 2011 Jetta my father said one day: "how did you like the Jetta?" She responded: "I Love it. The only thing is, I am driving too fast now and I feel I may hurt someone"

HUGE blindspot in the Flex. You have to be very careful. I don't recommend for moms. Maybe all cars that size or bigger have this prob, do not know.

My mom LOVES her Volvo XC60 T6. Her last car was a loaded 2009 Ford Flex (Bought in 2012 as a Ford CPO with 20,000 miles), with the refrigerator console in the back, and the vista roof. She liked the Flex at first, but started hating it due to issues.

VW Routan. Has a lot of space, nice steering, a solid engine, and great visibility. And it fits 7 comfortably it's perfect for moms. New Range Rover Sport. 7 seats, crazy fast for what it is, super luxurious. Classy enough for a dinner party, tough enough for a mud bog, fast enough for the 'ring.

I find myself having to not only check over my shoulder constantly, but also check the side mirror for the little yellow light AND the reflection. Otherwise the high belt line and the headrests of the rear seats block the view. Normally, a good look over your right shoulder will show you everything.
I've never driven a full sized SUV, so maybe this is normal for a big car, but I did not expect it from this.

Here in SoCal, the moms love the Ford Edge and similar (Toyota Venza).
Lots of minivans and full-size Yukons, too.
Basically big, tall wagons, whether they admit it or not.
![]() 05/11/2014 at 15:11 |

My mom has one of these, and while I agree with all of the above points, there is just one thing. It's huge. Huge interior = huge exterior. It's a pain in the ass to park anywhere: parallel, garage, and even just a regular parking space.
Also, it's on some Yokohama summer compound tires, so if you're parents aren't in the habit of changing tires in the winter, it is terrifying.
But it is so much fun to step on the gas. 0-60 in 5.5 seconds? So worth it.

Here in Mexico there has been several tendencies. First there was a love for the Big Body on Frame SUVs, around 2007-2010. Then 2010-2012 was all about minivans, specially the Sienna in white. Moms ONLY drive what everyone else does. Then, the tendency is going towards the 3 row crossovers from GM. Acadia and Enclave. NO ONE is unique, except 1 mother who took their kids in a yellow SRT-8 Superbee Charger

My mother got a 2011 Porsche 911 C2S Cab for mothers day last year. She likes it!

My mom drives an Expedition EL in the, lets stay, unsuitable roads in Mexico where ALL spaces are Compact classed. Also, I love stepping on the gas to hear the V8.

In '97 Mom needed a car, so I said she should get a Malibu because that was what she'd wind up with. But no - we went to the DC car show so she could sit in various cars and see if she could see the edges. Long story short - we test drove Camry, Accord, Taurus and a few others. She still has the Malibu. Perfect grandma car.
![]() 05/11/2014 at 15:17 |

Nice. We have more variety here. The mid-sizers seem to be coming back, maybe because our parking spaces are so tiny?
The GM 3-row crossovers are quite good, and the Enclave is very handsome. I didn't know it would be popular in Mexico.
![]() 05/11/2014 at 15:18 |

My mom also loves Audis, but she has always needed the 3 rows since we are 5. But with my sister going to college this summer I thing we will be saying goodbye to the Expedition. I will recommend the Audi.

Sure, but most of the Gen IV are 10 years old now. It's hilarious for today.
I own 2. An '02 with almost 200k, needs its first water pump. About a 30 min job. and my wife's '05. She runs a hybrid dog breeding business. Runs about 30k miles per year.
I live in the snow belt. I trust my entire family to either of those vans at any time. Very cheap to drive. Easy to fix. Swallow a sheet of plywood in a moments notice. There is very little they cannot do.
Plow snow and tow more than 5000 lbs are two of them.

It is, what I dislike is how some moms only buy cars because they see it a lot. It is what happened here with Mazdas, which are very very popular. I really think if you would show them the car with a nissan badge they would say it is ugly. This is the same with the White Siennas. Only this year I know of 4 people who's mothers changed from a random car to a White Sienna.
![]() 05/11/2014 at 15:25 |

Mothers in general or my mother? My mom would take something small and manoeuvrable (she's a smidgeon over 5 ft and likes to be able to see over the steering wheel), without much power (she does not want something that will 'try to get away from her'), must be a manual and preferably in blue. So this:
![]() 05/11/2014 at 15:25 |

I think the Venza is an underappreciated car. The mileage isn't great and it has some other shortcomings, but I think it's a sharp car.

She got it the year it came out, and it's been going 12 years strong, albeit with some linkage issues. Still a great car for a kid to grow up in/with. Not to mention my dad LOVES it.

Same thing will happen this year. I'll tell her that her next car will be a Civic. I'll drive down to DC and we'll sit in everything, then test drive, then we'll get the Civic. It's so predictable.

Growing up in New England, this was my mother's whip - a gas-engined Peugeot 504 Estate with a 5-speed stick. Quick enough, nimble, comfortable as hell, and held up to four sheep at a time. It was perfect; I wish I had one today.
![]() 05/11/2014 at 15:45 |

She's 81, and if she puts 2500 miles on a year, it's a lot. At this point, maybe just spend a couple grand on the Malibu and keep driving it. We'll see at the next service.

True story, rolling around my old college town with some friends a few weeks ago, we saw a new Flex in a nice metallic black, and the guy in the group who probably knows least about cars literally does a double-take and goes "Woah....what was that!?" The LS was getting too small for the family so we went down just to see if my wife would like the Flex. 20 minutes later she wants to start paperwork. Didn't get the Ecoboost (couldn't quite make the down that they wanted) but still happy with it. Great roadtrip car and more room behind the 3rd row then almost any of the other 3 row vehicles we looked at.
